Why Newcastle Homeowners Are Switching to Heat Pumps
An air source heat pump is one of the most effective upgrades a Newcastle homeowner can make – lowering heating costs, improving energy efficiency, and adding long-term value to your property.
Is Your Newcastle Home Suitable for a Heat Pump?
Suitability depends on your property type, available outdoor space, and your current heating system. We assess every home individually during a free survey, but here's what to expect based on the most common property types across Newcastle.
Tyneside Flats
A property type unique to the North East, concentrated across Byker, Walker, Heaton, and Benwell. These two-storey terraces are divided horizontally into an upper and lower flat, each with its own front door. Suitability for a heat pump depends on the available outdoor space and building layout, we assess each on a case-by-case basis during the survey.
Victorian and Edwardian Terraces
Common across Jesmond, Heaton, Fenham, and Sandyford. Large terraced properties, most on mains gas with older boilers. Rear yards or gardens typically provide adequate space for the outdoor unit, and the efficiency gain from replacing an ageing gas system in these homes is often substantial.
Post-War Housing
Found across Walker, Denton, Kenton, Fawdon, and Cowgate. Typically 2–3 bed semis with gardens and side access, making outdoor unit placement straightforward. Many of these properties have EPC ratings that make them strong ECO4 candidates.
Suburban Family Homes
Gosforth, Great Park, Kingston Park, and the Ponteland fringe. Well-insulated family homes with adequate garden space and modern electrics. Usually the most straightforward installations, with strong BUS grant eligibility.
Heat Pump Grants and Funding in Newcastle
There are two government-backed schemes that can reduce or fully cover the cost of an air source heat pump installation. With 55% of Newcastle homes rated EPC D or below and around 22,900 households experiencing fuel poverty, eligibility across the city is higher than many homeowners expect.

Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) – Up to £9,000
Open to homeowners replacing a carbon-intensive boiler with a heat pump. The grant is not means-tested and covers up to £9,000. We manage the full application and the grant is deducted directly from your invoice.
To qualify, your property typically needs to:
Have an existing gas heating system being replaced
Hold a valid EPC with no outstanding insulation recommendations
Be a home you own and occupy (or a property you're letting)
ECO4 – Fully Funded Installations
ECO4 can cover the full cost of an air source heat pump installation at no upfront cost to you. With 55% of Newcastle homes rated EPC D or below, eligibility across the city is higher than many homeowners expect.
You may be eligible if:
Your home has an EPC rating of D, E, F, or G
You receive qualifying benefits such as Universal Credit, Pension Credit, or Housing Benefit
You own your home or rent privately (with landlord consent)
