Why Middlesbrough Homeowners Are Switching to Heat Pumps
Switching from a gas or oil boiler to an air source heat pump is one of the most effective ways to reduce your heating costs and improve the long-term efficiency of your home.
Is Your Middlesbrough Home Suitable for a Heat Pump?
Suitability depends on your property type, available outdoor space, insulation levels, and your current heating system. We assess every home individually during a free survey, but here's how heat pumps typically work with the most common properties across Middlesbrough.
Victorian and Edwardian Terraced Houses
Found across Linthorpe, North Ormesby, and central Middlesbrough. Side access is often limited, but rear yards and passageways typically provide enough space for the outdoor unit. Many have solid walls or unfilled cavities – where insulation upgrades are needed, these can often be included as part of a funded installation.
Post-War Semi-Detached Homes
Properties from the 1990s onwards in Ingleby Barwick, Nunthorpe, and Stainton. Well-insulated with modern electrics and adequate garden space, typically the most straightforward installations. If your existing boiler is still relatively new, the case is more about future-proofing and taking advantage of the BUS grant while it's available.
Newer-Build Detached and Semi-Detached Homes
Properties from the 1990s onwards in Ingleby Barwick, Nunthorpe, and Stainton. Well-insulated with modern electrics and adequate garden space, typically the most straightforward installations. If your existing boiler is still relatively new, the case is more about future-proofing and taking advantage of the BUS grant while it's available.
Heat Pump Grants and Funding in Middlesbrough
There are two government-backed schemes that can reduce or fully cover the cost of an air source heat pump installation. Which one applies depends on your property and household circumstances.
Not sure which route is right for your home? Check your eligibility or speak to our team and we'll assess every available option.
Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) – Up to £9,000
Available to homeowners replacing a fossil fuel heating system with a heat pump. The grant covers up to £9,000 and is not means-tested. We handle the full application, and the grant comes straight off your invoice.
To qualify, your property typically needs to:
Have an existing gas, oil, or LPG heating system being replaced
Hold a valid EPC with no outstanding insulation recommendations
Be a home you own and occupy (or a property you're letting)
ECO4 – Fully Funded Installations
ECO4 can cover the full cost of an air source heat pump installation at no upfront cost to you.
You may be eligible if:
Your home has an EPC rating of D, E, F, or G
You receive qualifying benefits such as Universal Credit, Pension Credit, or Housing Benefit
You own your home or rent privately (with landlord consent)
