When Should You Service Your Boiler?

You’ve certainly heard that you should service your boiler on a regular basis, but what exactly does that imply? Is it necessary to service it once a month? Is it every year? Or are you going to wait till you have a problem?

It’s difficult to know when to get your boiler serviced because not everyone is a trained professional. That’s why we’ve outlined when you should get a boiler service, as well as why doing so is the best option for both your boiler and your wallet. Here’s when you should have your boiler serviced:

1. Service at least once a year

First and foremost, you should have your boiler serviced at least once a year.

A once-a-year service is sufficient to keep your boiler in good working order and reduce wear over time. Servicing on a more frequent basis is usually not necessary. An annual service not only keeps your boiler working when you need it, but it’s also a requirement of many new boiler warranties. If you want your boiler’s warranty to stay valid, you’ll need to service it once a year. If you don’t service your boiler on a regular basis, your home insurance may become void if you have a boiler problem.

2. When You’re Moving, There’s a Service

You should consider maintaining your boiler when you move into a new home, in addition to once a year.

When relocating, you may not be aware of when your boiler was last serviced. When you move, servicing will verify that the previous owner hasn’t left any problems behind. When you get a service when you move in, you’ll know when the boiler was last serviced, and you’ll be able to maintain servicing it annually after that.

3. Service During the Summer

Because your boiler should be serviced once a year, it’s a good idea to plan ahead and schedule your service when engineers are less busy.

You’ll be able to schedule an appointment sooner if you service your boiler during the summer months. If your boiler has to be serviced, doing so in the summer means you won’t be left freezing while it’s being fixed. Schedule your servicing for July or August to ensure that your boiler is ready to face whatever the upcoming winter throws at it. With the rush for the ECO3 government funded scheme making thousands of homeowners eligible for a free boiler, now is the best time to check.

4. If your boiler appears to be inefficient, consider hiring a service.

An annual service should suffice to keep your boiler in good working order, but if it’s been a while since your boiler was serviced and it’s acting inefficiently, a service may be necessary.

A boiler that isn’t performing efficiently is costing you money, so getting it repaired should get it back up to speed. A service will also reveal whether your boiler has any larger or more serious issues.

5. Don’t Wait Until You Have a Problem to Take Action

Most essential, don’t put off scheduling a boiler servicing until you have a problem.

If your boiler appears to be in good operating order, it may be tempting to ignore servicing because you believe there is no benefit. Even if your boiler is in good operating order, difficulties can arise over time. Waiting until your boiler breaks down will almost always result in higher repair costs than getting it serviced once a year.

Don’t put off getting your boiler serviced until it’s too late.
